Kenneth Okonkwo, the spokesperson for the Labour Party has emphasized the role of the court in interpreting the constitution during an interview regarding the Supreme Court's judgment. This decision upheld the position adopted by the presidential election petition tribunal that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) does not have a special status.

Speaking to Arise News, Kenneth Okonkwo acknowledged that the court's interpretation of the constitution is the primary and exclusive prerogative of the judiciary. Regardless of personal agreement or disagreement, he stressed that the courts possess the authority to interpret the law as granted by the constitution. This establishes the legal framework for the judiciary to clarify constitutional matters.

He further commented on the historic nature of the situation, as it marks the first time in Nigeria's history that a presidential candidate declared as the winner did not achieve the minimum requirement of securing 25% of the vote in the Federal Capital Territory. This outcome prompted Okonkwo to reflect on the distinction between a constitutional government and a democratic one.
